History found so far about this School...

Established as Belleview District # 68 teaching school in 1879. We later found that the building was built
closer to 1882 due to a purchase contract that was found at the register of deeds office at the Sumner
County courthouse. This school was valued at $300 and the teacher's salary was $80 per year.  The first
class was 16 boys and 9 girls.  It was typical to have students any where from 5 years old to students in their
early 20s.  It was used as a school until 1956.  Then it was used by the Caldwell Township as a polling place
till 1998.  

A school district law was established so that the pupils did not have to walk or ride to school more then 3
miles.
Requirements for a Standard Rural School...

  • School grounds at least on acre and kept in good condition
  • Good approaches to the house
  • Trees and shrubs where climatic conditions will permit
  • Two well-kept, widely separated outhouses with screened entrances
  • convenient fuel house properly located
  • well where possible
  • House well built, in good repair, and painted
  • Good foundation
  • Well lighted. Light from left side or left and rear
  • Adjustable window shades
  • Suitable cloak rooms for boys and girls
  • Attractive interior decorations
  • good blackboards, slate preferred, set about 26 inches from floor
  • Heated by a room heater and ventilator properly placed, or by basement furnace which provides for
    proper ventilation
  • Floor and interior clean and tidy
  • Desks suitable for children of all ages and properly placed
  • Good teacher's desk and chair
  • Good bookcase
  • A good collection of juvenile books suitable as aids to school work as well as general reading
  • Set of good maps, a globe and a dictionary
  • Sanitary water supply provided by the district board, thermometer, sweeping preparation
  • Sand table
  • School well organized
  • Classification and daily register well kept
  • Definite daily program
  • Attendance regular and punctual
  • Discipline good
Teacher Requirements:
  • Must hold a state certificate, a first grade county certificate, a normal training certificate or must at
    least hold a second grade certificate and be a graduate of a four year high school
  • Must receive at least the average salary of the county and in no case less then $385 a year
  • Ranked by the county superintendent as a good or superior teacher
  • Must read teachers' Reading Circle books, attend institutes and associations, and in other respects
    show a proper professional spirit.

kind of Chalk board out of plaster and chalk board paint
starting from the window around...

"Knowledge Hill" (Which is the school in section 8 and was later
moved and is now what is known as "Knowledge Hill" today),
"Spring valley" (Gone forever), "Greenman" (now a house in town),
Caldwell school (one room school used by fair board), Brown
School (Gone forever), Belleview (SAVED FOREVER!!).

The neat thing about Belleview is it is one of the rear schools still
left today that was built before the 1900s!  Again we are estimating
 it was built around 1882 because we have located a copy of the
contract when the land was first purchased from folks by the name
of William and Emma Dimke. You can see the name "W. Dimke"
name on this map at the original site! I'm not sure how often the
maps were updated back then but the transaction was made for
the one acre property which was purchased for 10.00 back in
November of 1881.
We will be digging deeper and deeper into the history of this
school for years!  It can be a struggle because they just didn't keep
much record of the building after it was a school. The latest school
record we have is 1951 and it is even missing the page that tells
what the student's names were.  We hope to find time to go to the
Wellington library to look through the old newspapers soon!

According to a date found in the addition
during the move, you can see on this page
they spent 26.90 to build that addition as
well as possibly make changes to the entry
way / front windows of the building!  We are
guessing this could have been WPA money.
